Photojournalistic or traditional style photography? Here’s how Sparrow has you covered!
Photojournalistic (PJ) photography
Technically speaking, PJ is completely non-posed and uses only the available light. This means no flash, no studio lights on stands, no backdrops, and no subjects looking at the camera.
Think of this as “fly on the wall” coverage that catches those pure, genuine moments. It’s perfect for during the wedding ceremony and catching those expressions on your guests during the reception.
While this style of photography indeed works for the bulk of a wedding day, in our opinion, it doesn’t work for all of it.
Traditional (or Classic) style photography
This is the style used to take beautiful, timeless portraits of the subjects. These are the portraits of a bride and groom, their families and wedding party. These images are often the most important ones to parents and grandparents.
Lighting is carefully set up and metered and images are retouched as needed. Often these are the portraits that end up framed on the wall, in the newspaper announcement, on the desk at work.
The perceived drawback to this style is that back in the day, these portraits took forever to set up and take. Now that digital photography has become the norm, and because Sparrow Photography has experience with studio lighting (and setting it up in no time), this isn’t an issue.
Many “photojournalistic photographers” either aren’t knowledgeable in using studio lighting or don’t care to do posed images, but we love it! We keep up with industry-current techniques so posed portraits always look fresh, yet timeless.
The Best of Both Worlds
Our blended style is unique in our ‘hands on’ approach to wedding day coverage. Check out our work on the blog (just select Weddings under Recent Work) and you’ll see how we utilize our skills to create different looks of images throughout the wedding day.
We’ll also work together before your wedding day to create fun, fresh engagement portraits. This gives us a chance to get to know each other. It’s so important for you to become comfortable with your photographer. After all, we’ll be together all day on the biggest day of your life!
