I have to say, this group of creative professionals really excites me at where weddings in Kansas City could be heading in the future. If the Hive flourishes, KC is going to have some of the most beautiful weddings you’ve ever seen.

I was mostly mingling, but I did manage to get a few pictures.

Sally & Eli really wanted to take photos here, after seeing the “Baggage” sign. I thought about this for a few seconds, before coming up with the “rolling suitcase” idea you see here. Everybody had a really hard time keeping a straight face through this part of the shoot.

Last night Erica and I met them on the Plaza for our session. The weather finally got warmer after what, a month of near 0-degree temperatures? Last night’s 30-something temps felt positively balmy, though of course a lot of the pretty snow had melted away. Trish is from Minneapolis, so she was ready for shorts!

Window shopping for rings is fun!

It didn't take much prodding to get them to kiss. And kiss. And kiss...

We absolutely love taking photographs on location, whether it be your home, a fancy hotel or some other place you find special. No cookie-cutter photos with generic backdrops here!

These photos are from Saturday evening. The client is from out of town, so little danger these will be seen by the wrong eyes before the big day!

I’m sure you know the process…  You make an appointment (if you’re lucky), which by the way you usually share the time slot with a few other customers, and hope that you get a photographer that knows what they’re doing.  You get there and wait (and wait and wait) in a germy, hot, crowded waiting area.  The baby wants to eat and you either have to nurse right there or find somewhere suitable…  or, shake up a bottle and serve it ever-so-carefully.  You get called in and you are asked to place your tiny, gorgeous baby into a funny looking baby holder.  The photographer squeaks a puppet and hollers at your little one, flashes lights in his or her face.  Baby spits up and/or fills diaper, mom&dad scramble to adress the issue, meanwhile photographer gets crabby and impatient.  Place baby back on table and repeat.  The pictures are okay at best, but look the same as everyone else’s.  Hmm.

Tiny babies are most comfortable at home.  You already know that.  Familiar faces & smells and an easy, relaxed approach to portraits is definitely the way to go.

No one likes being forced to perform..  which is kind of the feeling you get if you’re placed on a table with lights pointed at you, right?

Custom portrait sessions with new babies are often 2 hours long, allowing for lots of breaks.  Custom photography is about having a photographer experienced in all types of lighting situations come in and document your child in his or her own environment.  In the crib snuggled against the bedding that you so carefully chose.  Wrapped up in a vintage baby blanket or one handmade by a close friend.  And even something out of the ordinary, baby in his armoire.

Terms and Conditions:

• Prize includes an engagement or day after shoot with approximately 20 images with full artistic editing and eight hours of shooting of your wedding day with one photographer, approximately 400 wedding day images on disc – high res with basic edits.  Any prints or albums are additional.
• Blog entries must be submitted at least 3 times a month until the wedding day, and a follow up post after you’re married.  Subject matter can vary from wedding planning, to how your relationship evolves throughout your engagement, your opinion on current wedding trends.  Pictures every so often would be nice but aren’t required.
• Closing date for entries is January 30, 2010.
• Opportunity is open to new clients only who have not have already booked with Sparrow.
• Finalists will be chosen by Sparrow Photography based on who we think will fit in best with us, our business model and photographic style.
• Wedding and engagement shoot can take place anywhere in the world!  Transportation costs and lodgings for the wedding and engagement shoot (if applicable) must be covered by the winners. Travel is included within 100 miles of Kansas City, Missouri.
• Engagement shoot can be substituted for a “day after”/”cherish the dress” shoot if desired, where no extra travel costs would be applicable.
• Please include your wedding date with your entry.  In order to be considered, we must be available to shoot on your wedding day.
• Winners must be willing to be featured on SparrowPhotographyKC.com’s blog and will be required to sign Sparrow Photography’s standard wedding contract.
• No prizes may be exchanged or transferred and no cash alternative will be offered.
• By entering the guest bloggers pool, you hereby warrant that all information in blog entries submitted by you is true, current and complete.
• The winner will be contacted via their email address on the competition conclusion date.

Can’t have a baby belly without ice cream…

Finally the day arrived..  our beautiful Roxy Pearl.  I went over to Chris & Ashley’s house to take Roxy’s newborn portraits, and their house was a little dark that day due to the weather.  Their hall bath, however, has a cool glass block window and plenty of light!  I took most of these portraits in there and am glad I did.  Here’s Roxy with her daddy.
